ED-R Humboldt - Imformation on Flight Operations
What is the ED-R Humboldt?
The ED-R Humboldt is a temporarily established flight restriction area in the Berlin region with a 60 NM diameter around the government quarter. It is particularly activated during state visits when they are subject to special risks, but also occasionally during major sporting events. It serves the safety of air traffic as well as public security.
Due to the proximity to Berlin, the Schönhagen airfield may also be affected by these restrictions.
The activation times and exact extent are published via NOTAM by the German Air Traffic Control (DFS). During activation, only certain flights are allowed, including:
- Police flights from federal and state authorities
- Flights of the Federal Armed Forces
- Ambulance, rescue, and disaster relief operations
- IFR flights with corresponding security clearance according to ICAO Annex 17 or Regulation (EC) No. 300/2008
Please refer to the currently valid NOTAM for the complete regulations. Unless otherwise regulated there, the following applies:
VFR flights are not possible!

IFR Approaches to Schönhagen
IFR approaches to Schönhagen are only possible if they are launched from a controlled-security airport. Anyone who has departed from an uncontrolled-security airport must unfortunately plan a stopover at a suitable airport.
IFR Departures from Schönhagen
Since July 2025, the necessary security measures for IFR departures during the activation of ED-R Humboldt can be provided not only at BER but also at Schönhagen airfield.
For you, this means:
Air traffic operations remain as straightforward as usual. During active restriction periods, we temporarily set up a security area with personnel and baggage checks.
